A Letter from Nick to Gatsby persuading him to give up his hopes for a relationship with Daisy
To the Sincerest Friend I Will Ever Have,
I would first like to appreciate the very considerate attitude you’ve shown in the matter of only a few days we have known each other. I have to admit that, even though I have heard much and indeterminate features of you, you have been one hard man to get a sense of.
Jay, different from what others have said of you, however, you are in fact a very considerate individual who simply know how to care for others. Given such character, I must tell you that it would be best for all if you can let Daisy go her own way and yourself go your own.
Most importantly, you must realize that I am saying this from the most objective perspective, neither with prejudice nor with greed for anything. I think it is best for you to give up Daisy because she is already settled and somewhat happily committed to a family. It is not only the righteous choice but also a responsibility of yours if you truly care for her well-being.
To continue, even if she eventually decides to come to you, it would mean that Daisy would be chasing after your very own materialistic authorities in return for having abandoned her husband and daughter. I notice that you are generally magnanimous in your spending, but I still believe it is not a fair deal to win her with your wealth when she is just not that into you.
Finally, you have to realize that you can hurt her. Though I have stayed reluctant to discuss the topic with you, I now open up to you to speak of the illegal and deceitful means through which you have earned your living. Not to mention the anxiety I feel talking about such issue, you must think about the consequences not only you but also she would have to face eventually.
Hopefully you will make a decision in favor of all of us. I hope that you take all these thought-out reasons seriously and carefully in making your decision, which I will respect in all perspective. However, I honestly and sincerely do not recommend you to continue chasing after what you cannot and should not grasp, simply for all our benefit. Life will turn against you. Don’t let the term “home wrecker” get inside your mind.
Look in a broader sense, Jay
With the Best of Luck, Nick C.
